All about Shark Week 2026
Every year, people around the world celebrate “Shark Week,” a week-long tradition that began as a programming event on the Discovery Channel featuring films and stories centered around sharks - from sensationalized portrayals of these animals as fearsome predators to documentaries highlighting their remarkable biology and essential role in ocean ecosystems.
For Ilili and many other conservation organizations, Shark Week is an opportunity to transform the public’s fascination with sharks into understanding, appreciation, and action. It is a chance to share knowledge, challenge misconceptions, and reveal the extraordinary animals behind the myths. This year, Ilili hosted our second annual Shark Awareness Week in Roatan, bringing our community together for a week of creative, educational, and inspiring events designed to celebrate sharks while raising funds for their conservation.
We kicked off the week with an event we call “Craft & Connect.” Hosted at Jungle Water, Ilili’s jewelry designer created a beautiful charm bar featuring pieces from Ilili’s own jewelry line. Participants could design a one-of-a-kind charm necklace or bracelet, creating a personal reminder of the ocean to carry with them wherever they go, all while supporting shark conservation.
The afternoon offered a relaxed and creative space to come together as a community, learn about sharks and ocean ecology, and talk about the many ways each of us can contribute to protecting the ocean. With every charm chosen and every piece of jewelry assembled, conversations about conservation flowed, and all proceeds from the event were donated directly to Ilili’s shark conservation efforts.
Next, we brought some color to Shark Week with a shark-themed tie-dye party at Roatan Brewing Co. This hands-on afternoon was delightfully messy, leaving participants with rainbow-stained hands, colorful one-of-a-kind shirts, and a little more inspiration to protect the ocean.
We enjoyed watching each person transform a plain white Ilili T-shirt into something bursting with color and personality. Beyond the tie-dye, the event gave us an opportunity to meet new members of the Roatan community and strengthen the connections that make local conservation possible. The space buzzed with laughter, creativity, and conversations about sharks, and the turnout was incredible. Most importantly, we were able to introduce many young people to the world of sharks and raise funds to support Ilili’s ongoing conservation work.
For Shark Awareness Week, we also hosted “Fins & Frames” at Spirit Origin Coffee, which is our ocean-inspired take on a traditional paint-and-sip. Participants painted their own shark or ray masterpieces while listening to Ilili founder and executive director Gabriela Ochoa share her knowledge of these animals and the ecosystems they inhabit.
As brushes moved across canvases, conversations turned toward conservation, ecology, and the importance of sharks and rays to healthy oceans. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions directly to a shark expert, making the evening not only a creative outlet, but also a chance to see these often-misunderstood animals from a new perspective.
One of the most exciting events of the week was our Shark Awareness Dive, held in collaboration with Sun Divers. This unique experience gave participants the rare opportunity to learn about sharks from an expert before encountering them in their natural environment. The day began with an engaging presentation led by Ilili founder Gabriela Ochoa covering shark biology, the threats sharks face, and their vital role in maintaining healthy reef ecosystems in Roatan.
From there, participants headed underwater for a guided dive alongside Caribbean reef sharks. There is something powerful about seeing a shark up close. For many people, encountering these animals face-to-face can transform fear into curiosity and, ultimately, understanding. Shark dives have an ability to inspire conservation because they create a personal connection, one that can stay with someone long after they return to the surface. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and we are already looking forward to bringing it back next year.
As the sun went down, Shark Week continued into the nightlife scene with our “Sharks & Shots” event. This shark-themed bar crawl brought the conservation conversation into the evening, combining a scavenger hunt across three local venues with plenty of dancing, laughter, and community spirit.
Participants proudly showed off the tie-dyed Ilili shirts they had created earlier in the week and it was especially fun to see all the different designs people created. Bringing people together to celebrate the ocean was a reminder that conservation can take many different forms. Supporting shark conservation while dancing the night away will never be a bad idea.
To close out a week filled with creativity, learning, and community, we hosted a “Sharks & Rays 101” presentation at D'Tierra Firme. The presentation welcomed people of all ages and backgrounds, from those who already knew and loved sharks to those just beginning to discover the fascinating world beneath the surface. Gabriela Ochoa shared her expertise in shark biology and conservation and answered questions from the audience, creating an open space for curiosity and conversation. Everyone left with a deeper understanding of sharks, rays, and the ecosystems they help to sustain.
Building a community of informed, passionate people and inspiring a new generation of conservationists is one of the most important things we can do for the future of sharks and rays. Conservation begins with connection: when people understand an animal, they are more likely to care about it; when they care, they are more likely to protect it. Throughout the week, we saw that spark of curiosity grow again and again.
For Ilili, Shark Week is about so much more than watching television programs about sharks. Our Shark Awareness Week is an opportunity to bring people together, build knowledge, celebrate the ocean, and turn that excitement into meaningful conservation action. Understanding sharks’ ecological significance and recognizing the threats they face is the first step toward protecting them. Every conversation, every new connection, and every person who leaves with a little more appreciation for sharks brings us one step closer to a healthier ocean.
All of the funds raised throughout Shark Awareness Week went directly toward Ilili’s shark conservation efforts. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us, donated, asked questions, got creative, got messy, stepped into the water, and, most importantly, showed up for the sharks.
Together, we made Shark Week about more than sharks on a screen. We made it about the living animals beneath the waves, the communities that depend on healthy oceans, and the future we can help protect. We are excited to see where next year’s Shark Awareness Week takes us!
