WHAT
WE
DO

Honduras means “depths” in Spanish, and the name suits our country really well, as our territory is 69% water. Despite being surrounded by water, we know very little about our oceans and especially about inhabitants like sharks and rays. Ilili’s initiatives aim at conducting research, to protect these species better while also trying to support those who depend on them. Our initiatives are inclusive, involving a wide range of stakeholders from artisanal fishers, government partners, local students, and citizen scientists.

MPA Areas

We seek to understand the role of marine protected areas as tools to conserve significant populations of sharks and rays.

Shark and Ray Fisheries

We investigate the economical roles of sharks and rays in Honduras.

Citizen Science

We believe that anyone can get involved in shark and ray research and support meaningful conservation action. Over the years we have built two citizen science projects :

  • Eagle ray photo-ID

  • Shark Sightings Database
